ETL – Data Mapping

Problem:
Company was purchased. The previous SAP download to a specialized commission application had to be replaced with data from the various sources in the purchasing company to tables in the commission system.
Why it was important:
Keeping the commission system consistent and sales reps happy was important for company moral during the changeover period
Attempts at resolution:
Mapping data streams from purchasing company to SAP data. Not all data elements used in the application where available.
Solution:
ETL: Identify the most important elements, setting up new roll-ups, eliminating data and calculations that were no longer needed or important, simplifying the system as much as possible. Loading and cleaning incoming data, mapping incoming meaning to requirements of existing system.
Summary:
When there is a change it is not necessary to replicate a system in it’s entirety. Concentrating on the essential parts more important than worrying about the 5-10% of exceptions.
